How can a magician carry out actions in full view without the audience noticing?
One of the key principles of deception in magic is misdirection; the magician distracts
the audience in order to carry out unnoticed what would otherwise be an obvious
action (see Lamont and Wiseman 1999). For many years, magicians have been exploit-
ing visual phenomena that psychologists have learned only recently: those of change
blindness and inattentional blindness.
